Toyota Plans to Return to Pikes Peak to Defend Its EV Racing Title

It's great to come in first place in a race, but even better to accomplish this two years in a row to defend your title. This is exactly the strategy that Toyota is going for this year as it plans to return to the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, only this time by stepping up its game with an enhanced EV race car. Last year Toyota took first place in the electric car division with its P0002 racer and sixth place overall at the event. Now the automaker is modifying its racecar to ensure a defeat against its competition.

In order to properly prepare, it brought the all-electric race car to its Racing Development facility located in Salisbury, North Carolina. The crew there will be performing extensive track testing to improve the vehicle's aerodynamics. Its unique chassis design will undergo some adjustments as well to make the model as speedy as possible.

The P002 racer gets its power from a 42-killowatt lithium-ion battery pack mounted in the rear that can be conveniently charged off the A/C power grid. It powers the vehicle's enhanced electric motor which has undergone some tweaks of its own. Engineers have altered its speed and torque so that the powertrain will be better suited for the incline it will encounter at Pikes Peak.

Now it's all up to Rod Millen, who Toyota has selected to be the lucky driver of the P002 racer. Millen is well known at Pikes Peak for breaking records over the years, along with his son Rhys Millen who currently holds the event's run record. Here at Kerry Toyota we are keeping our fingers crossed that Toyota will come away with another victory, because it looks as though the racecar will certainly be ready to take on the challenge.
