What's New for the 2018 Toyota Tundra?

When Toyota announced that it would be discontinuing its Scion division last year, many were worried that the automaker was moving in a more conservative direction, but if its latest crop of vehicles is any indication, Scion's spirit is alive and well at the Toyota headquarters. Originally a Scion concept vehicle, the Toyota Tundra follows much of that brand's signature aesthetics and a cross-segment profile. Combining the elements of a coupe, a subcompact hatchback and a crossover SUV, it is spacious, versatile and fun to drive, not to mention outstandingly unique in its styling. The thought behind this unique vehicle seems to have been rather simple: take all of the features that customers have been asking for in the compact segment and combine them in a unique way.

Despite not being a true SUV, the Tundra features the high seating position and ground clearance that have made compact crossovers so popular. The styling is distinctly modern and athletic, with sharp lines, bold fenders and even a rear lip spoiler that Toyota claims is functional as well as stylish. However, the Tundra does not sacrifice utility on the altar of style either. While it looks like a coupe, it actually uses a 2 + 2 door design, allowing easy access to the rear seats and the cargo compartment - another popular feature among the Tundra's target demographic. To make it even more versatile, the seats fold completely flat, helping you get as much space as possible out of this little car. And once you make it into the driver's seat, the Tundra delivers a very connected and feature-rich experience thanks to a well-integrated 7-inch LCD display and an intuitive control cluster Toyota named the "MeZONE".

From a performance standpoint, the new Tundra is not meant to be a speed demon, but it certainly looks like it will prove to be comfortable and responsive, thanks to the combination of a 2.0-liter four cylinder engine with 144 horsepower and 140 pound-feet of torque and a continuously variable transmission with a seven-speed sport mode. It is also getting all of the latest safety technology, from a rearview camera and blind spot monitors to lane-change assist and a forward collision warning with automated braking and pedestrian detection. With so many great features and design elements in a distinctive and good-looking package, the 2018 Tundra looks like it will leverage its cross-segment position into cross-segment appeal.
