 What's New for the 2018 Toyota 4Runner?

The midsize SUV market is flooded with products that cannot handle themselves on the beaten paths - but not the 4Runner. In a world where SUVs grew soft and can no longer keep up even with sedans, the Toyota 4Runner stands tall. It is what you would call a modernized traditional SUV. Toyota brings back the 4Runner for the 2018 model year with two new option packages and three new exterior colors. The latest forerunner comes with standard RWD and optional FWD although some performance-oriented trims come standard with the latter drivetrain. You can have the model with a five or seven-passenger capacity. A 4.0-liter V-6 pushing out 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque drives the Toyota 4Runner. It pairs with a five-speed automatic to return 17/21 mpg on rear-drive models and 17/20 mpg city/highway four-wheel drive. The SUV provides ample cargo space with 9.0 cu ft behind the third row, 47.2 cu ft behind second-row seats, and 89.7 cubic feet with both rear rows flattened. A fully-equipped 2018 4Runner tows up to 5,000 lbs. The 4Runner provides a smooth ride both on the pavement and off-road thanks to tall tires. It drives well and corners effortlessly for its size making city maneuvering much more fun. All models are well-composed and a centrally-placed absorber reduces lean in corners. Unlike most off-roaders, the 4Runners' on-pavement ride is far from stiff. Turning onto an unpaved road brings out the vehicle's fire and it almost drives itself.

The base SR5 trims come standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, a power liftgate, cloth upholstery, an eight-way power driver's seat, keyless entry, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It also has Bluetooth connectivity, a multi-information display, Toyota’s Entune with a 6.1-inch display, and a rearview camera. Adding the SR5 Premium gets you navigation, leatherette upholstery, a power passenger seat, and heated front seats. The Limited trim gets leather upholstery, driver’s seat memory, dual-zone climate control, a JBL premium audio system, and 20-inch chrome alloy wheels. The top-tier TRD models install off-road-worthy features such as a Multi-Terrain Select System, off-road tires, a locking rear differential, and skid plates. They also receive Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system, Crawl Control, and Bilstein shocks. The Limited trim also includes a performance-oriented suspension that integrates the X-REAS Sports Enhancement Suspension, limited-slip differential, and full-time FWD with built-in Active Traction Control. The 2018 4Runner performed very well for its class in government and federal safety tests. The NHTSA gave it a four out of a possible five score for overall safety. Although the IIHS is yet to test the current model, the 2017 offering earned a top-most "Good" on all crash tests. Standard safety features include eight airbags, active head restraints, a rearview camera, anti-lock brakes, and stability control.
