 What's New for the 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid?

The 2019 Toyota Avalon Hybrid comes with a substantial redesign over models from previous years, built on a new platform shared with the Camry and several other Toyota vehicles. Although the design is slightly stiffer in the new model, it's a little longer than the in the past and provides more creature comforts inside the cabin.

Performance and Design

The 2019 Avalon hybrid has an update 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engine with two electric motors that give it 215 hp. The available torque from the electric motor makes it ideal for everyday driving. A continuously variable transmission is paired with the hybrid powertrain. Drivers have a choice of three driving modes, Normal, Eco and Sport, with the last providing additional power to the engine. The Eco mode also provides an intelligent coasting feature that maximizes regenerative braking power. When you select the Hybrid XSE, steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters are standard. Fuel economy has made significant gains from previous years, with the 2019 Avalon hybrid rated at an EPA-estimated 43 mpg for its city, highway and combined cycles, an improvement of about 10 percent.

When it comes to exterior design, the most noticeable change is the massive front grille, with large faux air intakes. The XSE trim has an additional honeycomb mesh insert. The rest of the Avalon Hybrid lines are elegant with a rear that gently slopes into a full-width tail light display. inside, the cabin has soundproofing upgrades to give passengers a quieter ride. Standard interior materials include grained plastics and suede inserts that give the cabin a pleasing look. The center touchscreen is large and easy to reach and features clearly marked buttons and knobs, showing navigation, vehicle and safety information. Passengers will also find a spacious backseat the easily accommodates several adults. Available upgrades include a moonroof, quilted leather seating and wood trim.

Safety and Entertainment

Toyota's Safety Sense P that includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, emergency automatic braking and pedestrian detection and automatic high beams is standard, along with a rearview camera and blind-spot monitoring. Safety options include automatic reverse braking, parking sensors and a surround-view camera and steering-responsive LED headlights.

Toyota's Entune 3.0 infotainment system is standard with a 9-inch screen, and for the first time, Toyota has included Apple CarPlay. The system is also able to integrate with smartwatches and gives drivers a WiFi hotspot. Five USB ports are standard to keep all of your devices charges. A 14-speaker sound system is standard with an available JBL 1,200-watt unit as an upgrade.
