Technology Updates for the 2019 Toyota Corolla

Introduction

Throughout its production run, the Toyota Corolla has built a strong reputation for its reliability and affordability. As technology continues to improve, Toyota has been continuously developing methods to improve the Corolla; making it safer, more economical, and more comfortable. The 2019 Corolla retains its highly-favored attributes, but now comes with updates that improve the popular model. The most notable of these updates are the technological updates that have been made in order to improve the safety of the 2019 Corolla.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0

The Toyota Safety Sense, also known as TSS, safety suite is now in its second generation. The hatchback trim of the 2019 Toyota Corolla will be the first North American Toyota vehicle to receive Toyota's TSS suite. The suite will come standard for the Corolla hatchback. Cleverly named Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, the suite includes safety features such as lane departure alert, pre-collision alert, dynamic radar cruise control; to name a few.

Updates to the suite now include the ability for TSS to detect pedestrians under night-time and limited light conditions. Previously, the safety system needed adequate lighting in order to distinguish pedestrians from road signs or other objects. The system has been updated so that the system can see pedestrians, who are moving,in areas that do not have much light. Though the system now works well at night, what is even more advanced is that it can detect bicyclists during day time conditions. However, the system struggles to detect bicycles at night due to the variety of shapes and sizes available for bicycles.

Lane Departure

The lane departure alert system of the Corolla works at speeds of more than 32 miles per hour. Compared to years previous, the 2019 Corolla lane departure alert system is more capable in that it now utilizes more than road lines in order to create alerts. The updated alert system is now able to detect the edge of a road without needing road lines to do so, and will both alert a driver and apply steering assist when the vehicle is approaching the edge of the road.

Lane Tracing Assist

Available on higher-level trims of the 2019 Toyota Corolla is lane tracing assist. Lane tracing assist is an active feature that is only available for continuously variable transmission (CVT) models. Lane tracing assist controls steering when cruise control is on and is able to keep a vehicle centered while a driver relaxes on cruise control.

Offered as an additional package for the lane tracing assist system is a road-sign assist package, which detects a variety of road signs. The system can detect stop signs, speed limit signs, and "do not enter" signs, to name a few.

Conclusion

As time progresses, Toyota plans to update many more aspects of the Toyota Corolla. The new technology updates for the 2019 Toyota Corolla are a testament to the capabilities of Toyota. As Toyota's best-selling sedan, Toyota has continued to focus their energy on improving the Corolla.
