Crossover SUVs come in several sizes these days. The 2017 Toyota RAV4, for instance, may appear on some of the same lists as the 2017 Honda HRV. Yet these two are quite different when it comes to size and features.

Trim Levels and Pricing

The Toyota RAV4 is offered in five trim levels and several hybrid trims, while the Honda HR-V is offered in three trims. While the base price for the 2017 RAV4 is higher, $24,910, compared to the 2017 HR-V, $19,465, it has more to offer.** The 2017 RAV4 leads its class by providing state-of-the-art crash avoidance features on its base edition and better performance. All 2017 Toyota RAV4 models are equipped with 6-speed automatic transmissions, while the Honda HR-V incurs additional cost to upgrade from the standard 6-speed manual.

Performance

You’ll find the 2017 Toyota RAV4 to be more capable then it’s competitor. The HR-V powertrain delivers only 141 horsepower and a paltry 127 lb.-ft. of torque. By contrast, the RAV4 generates 176 horsepower and a much more helpful 172 lb.-ft. of torque. While the HR-V is not rated for towing, the RAV4 can tow up to 1,500 pounds. When it comes to fuel economy, the HR-V does have a slight advantage, but the RAV4 still earns 31 mpg highway.* If fuel economy is your main goal, the RAV4 hybrid definitely fits the bill. It is surprising to note, but, although it is larger, the RAV4 actually has a tighter turning radius than the HR-V. This gives it a handling advantage in tight spaces. Other RAV4 handling advantages include a limited slip differential and speed-proportionate steering.

Spaciousness

Fourteen inches longer and three inches wider, the 2017 Toyota RAV4 is able to offer a more generous interior to seat five passengers. More cabin space is always welcome, especially on the back row where the RAV4 provides more headroom, legroom and shoulder room. The RAV4 cargo area measure 38 cu.ft., easily beating the 24 cu.ft. in the Honda HR-V.
