2018 Toyota Highlander vs 2018 Ford Escape

Serving Florence, Fort Mitchell, and Burlington, KY

The crowded marketplace for small SUVs includes several vehicles that provide versatility, stylishness and excellent resale value. Two leaders in this segment are the 2018 Toyota Highlander and the 2018 Ford Escape. Both vehicles are available with front- or all-wheel drive, and the Toyota offers a hybrid variant. We recommend a test-drive of the two, because we’re confident you’ll be convinced that the Highlander is the more capable vehicle and also the better value.

Performance

Each model offer multiple gasoline engines, but the ones from Toyota are stronger. The Highlander base engine is a 2.7-liter I-4 with 185 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, but you can upgrade to a 3.5-liter V6 outputting 295 horsepower and 263 lb-ft of torque. Both engines mate to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Ford offers a 168-horsepower, 170-lb-ft 2.5-liter I-4, a 179-horsepower, 177 lb-ft 1.5-liter turbo-4, and a 2.0-liter I-4 with 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft. All three share a 6-speed automatic. The horsepower winner is the 2018 Highlander Hybrid with a 3.5-liter V6 mated to an AC 650-volt permanent-magnet motor, good for a combined output of 306 horses.

Dimensions

Highlander can seat up to eight occupants, vs five in the Escape. The Toyota is longer and has a longer wheelbase, yet it has a smaller turning diameter. In terms of spaciousness, Highlander dwarfs Escape in passenger, cargo and total cubic feet. It also provides more front legroom and shoulder room.

Safety

The 2018 Highlander comes standard with a rearview camera and Toyota Safety Sense Plus, which includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, active cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure alert and warning. An around-view camera is available. The Escape offers several of these safety features, but as optional rather than standard equipment.
