Performance

The 1.8 liter 4-cylinder engine at the heart of the 2016 Corolla proved to be so well-suited to the vehicle that it has returned for the 2017 model year. Equipped with variable valve timing, the engine puts out 132 horsepower in the L, LE, and S models. In the LE Eco model, the 1.8 liter power plant utilizes valvematic technology to boost it up to 140 horsepower. For economical pricing, the 2016 L model comes with a 4-speed automatic transmission that produces 27 mpg city and 36 mpg highway.* A continuously variable transmission paired with the standard 1.8 liter engine in the LE and S models supplies 29 mpg city and 38 mpg highway while the CVT works in the LE Eco to offer 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.* For the 2017 Corolla, the 4-speed transmission has been eliminated and a 6-speed manual transmission is available for the new SE model.

Appearance

As a family sedan, the Corolla aims to present a sense of continuity, so design changes from the 2016 model to the 2017 model are relatively subtle. Starting from the front, the grille has expanded in the 2017 Corolla to take on more of the six-sided shape common to all other Toyota lineups. Above, headlights have been refashioned with a narrower profile than their 2016 predecessors. They’ve also swapped out the halogen high beams with efficient LED technology. Outward changes also include a reshuffling of the color palette with brown sugar metallic, 4evergreen mica, and absolutely red being retired while black cherry pearl, falcon gray metallic, and galactic aqua mica have been added. Inside, the 2017 Corolla includes black, orange zest, and vivid blue in its upholstery selections, and the fluid, triangular side vents on the dashboard have morphed into circles.

Safety

With very similar body designs and dimensions, it’s no surprise that both the 2016 and 2017 Corollas have captured a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for overall crash test performance. Changes to the 2017 series have also earned the top score of Good in all categories from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The earlier 2016 Corolla also received the rating of Good for most categories except the small overlap front collision test. Both years possess antilock brakes, airbags, stability and traction control, and tire pressure monitoring. All models of the 2016 Corolla except the introductory L also include a backup camera while the 2017 Corolla installs this feature in all of its models. The 2017 Corolla also creates a contrast with its predecessor by including high-tech additions like collision and pedestrian detection with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane drifting alert in all models.

The Toyota Corolla has maintained a top spot among compact sedans for 50 years due to quality, reliability, and steady innovation.
